Sony has confirmed that it has already begun development on PlayStation 4.
The company's EVP and chief financial officer Masaru Kato told a conference call today that work on the system is "already underway".
He revealed that production resource was factored into costs for the company's full year financial results, which were released yesterday.
"For the home equipment the PS3 still has a product life," he said.
"But this is a platform business, so for the future platform - when we'll be introducing what product, I cannot discuss - but our development work is already under way, so the costs are incurred there."
The head of Sony's global games development team, Shuhei Yoshida, said last year that the firm expects Microsoft and Nintendo to launch their 'next-gen' home systems before the new PlayStation arrives on the market.
"Naturally, in my opinion, Microsoft will make the first move," he said. "Or, because Nintendo's approach was not to upgrade much on its basic hardware - Wii doesn't even support HD resolution - so they might be the first to move.
"Probably we should watch these companies, in my opinion. Because PS3 was later than Xbox, and is more powerful, so it has a longer lifespan."
PlayStation 3 launched in Japan and the US in November 2006, but didn't reach Europe until March the following year. According to Sony, the system has sold over 50 million units to date.
Nintendo's Wii hit shelves in the same month in the US. Nintendo has confirmed that it will unveil its new home console - reportedly dubbed 'Project Cafe' - at E3 in two weeks' time.

as usual, 5 years into the consoles life span mg andam na na sila para sa next console.. naa pa tay 5 years for the ps3. so, pwede pa ta mag ipon ug maski 100 kada week para pag release sa ps4 lets say 5 years later, naa na ta 24,000 pang palit ps4. hehe

Sony has at long last confirmed it will begin restoring PlayStation Network services in Japan and other Asian territories tomorrow.
Phased restoration of the network will begin tomorrow in Japan, Taiwan, Singapore, Malasia, Indonesia and Thailand, with both PSN and Qriocity coming back online.
The delay is believed to be due to the Japanese government, which demanded Sony provides more information on the measures it has taken to improve security following the high-profile hacking incident.
The government also reportedly demanded information on how Sony plans to regain consumer confidence after losing valuable personal data such as credit card information and passwords.
The first phase of restoration will include:
Sign-in and password change for PSN and Qriocity
Friend Category functionality -- Friend List, Chat, and Trophy
PS3 and PSP online play
PlayStation Home
Torne's network functionality
For Japan-based players, Sony will also be offering a "Welcome Back" package.
PS3 owners will be able to select two free titles from the following:

Hustler King
PSP owners will get to select two titles from the following:

^murag pasabot nila na dili na sila magpalugi per unit sold like the ps3 after more than 4 years karon pa lang sila naka profit per ps3 unit sold due to nagbaba ang production cost. so basi pasabot nila ps4 might be damn expensive kung dili na sila palugi. i bought my ps3 back then 4 years ago early 2007 around 30k unsa na lang kaya ning ps4 pila kaya ilang presyo ani pag release kung sa price sauna naa pa sila na incur na lost. ug basi pud since production cost nagbaba compared tung dati masdali na lang pud siguro magproduce ug mga bago kusgan na pyesa at a lower cost. lain na baya ang panahon sa technology karon, ang mga cellphone nagpapangap na computer ug ang computer nagpapangap na cellphone na baya ni na panahon... question - magpalit mo ug ps4 kung ang presyo 50k?
