Re: Kingdoms of Amalur and Mass Effect 3
Really terrible and bad news for the whole gaming industry and
for us hardcore gamers....
http://www.ign.com/articles/2012/05/24/report-38-studios-lays-off-entire-staff
Wtf, they needed about 3 million copies to be sold
just to "break even"?!? And for a studio's first ever big AAA title,
1.2 million is pretty good, but 3 million? Its a shame not alot
of gamers gave this title a chance. It was a pretty good game/franchise,
which will now remain the only KoA game to ever be in existence.
And I was looking forward to more KoA games down the road
for this series. I have to admit Kingdom of Amalur: Reckoning was not
as awesome/epic as Skyrim, but it was still pretty much alright.
Guess no patch or future DLC huh?
This is really sad.....damn that Curt Schilling!
for us hardcore gamers....
Following recent financial problems, the entire staff of 38 Studios has been laid off and Big Huge Games has been closed.
Kotaku broke the news that layoffs were happening at Big Huge Games earlier today followed by a report from The Verge that 38 Studios has let go its entire staff. Now, WPRI in Rhode Island has confirmed the layoffs.
According to WPRI, the following memo was sent to all 38 Studios employees earlier today:
"The Company is experiencing an economic downturn. To avoid further losses and possibility of retrenchment, the Company has decided that a companywide lay off is absolutely necessary.
These layoffs are non-voluntary and non-disciplinary.
This is your official notice of lay off, effective today, Thursday, May 24th, 2012."
Lead world designer Colin Campbell also confirmed the layoffs at Big Huge on Twitter, writing "Big Huge Games was home for my wife and me for our adult lives so far. I'll miss it terribly, but so proud. Good night and good luck."
In a press conference this afternoon, Rhode Island governor Lincoln Chafee said that the studio needed to sell three million copies of Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning in order to break even, but the game ultimately sold 1.2 million. "The game failed," he added.
In addition to the release of Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning in February, 38 recently revealed its MMO, Project Copernicus.
IGN wishes the best of luck to any employees let go today. For those affected, a Google Doc of industry jobs currently available has been making the rounds on Twitter.

sad news indeed. Was looking forward to more KoA games in the future..
If only they could have added multiplayer in the game.. it had the makings of a hack and slash borderlands style lootfest rpg. It might have sold an extra million copies..

Re: Kingdoms of Amalur and Mass Effect 3
^I know right?? I really liked the game, it was probably the only RPG I've played with a very solid action style battles, action in the sense of DMC or GoW
I was actually hoping for a KoA 2 with an even better storytelling, because you have to admit, the game would have been near flawless if not for the way the story was told...It was just plain boring, take note, the story-telling, not the story...Everything else about the game was excellent for me

Yep, and it's basically and mostly EA's fault.
Buying up developers and game houses then foreclosing them
if they don't meet their expectations.
EA and Activision are all the same.
Although as of recent years, EA has gotten more friendlier
with it's business practices but this move just brings them
back to being "evil" again.
